"The objective of the Society is to collect, document, preserve, interpret and make known the historical and genealogical facts of the New Ross District, formerly known as Sherbrooke, in the County of Lunenberg, and being in the Province of Nova Scotia."

The Society was founded March 14th, 1988, and effective February 2, 2006 was incorporated and registered as a non-profit society under the Societies Act of Nova Scotia, chapter 435, of the revised statues of Nova Scotia.

The administration if the affairs of the society is achieved by a body people comprised of an executive, committees and a membership which operate in accordance with a set of by-laws approved by the Minister in charge of administering the Societies Act of Nova Scotia, currently through Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations, Registry of Joint Stock Companies.
